Education.au handover management of the Exchange to ALTC |

As from September 30, 2008, Education.au will be formally handing over management of the ALTC Exchange to the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) given that build phase has been completed successfully. The ALTC Exchange is a hub for the exchange of ideas about teaching practice, access to quality teaching resources, connecting people with people, and providing opportunities to share knowledge, experience, and know-how within the higher education sector.

Fresh features for My Guide |
|
Over the next nine months Education.au will be designing and developing fresh features for My Guide. This will be funded by DEEWR, and overseen by the My Guide reference group.
The project will be conducted in three stages. Enhancements to login, navigation and visual elements in My Guide will be part of the first stage. Developments will also include a mini MyGuide ‘taster’ and a virtual tour.
Following these enhancements, users will find My Guide even more accessible and engaging. Career practitioners will find it easier to introduce users to myfuture’s personalised career exploration tool. To see the current version and explore career ideas, visit My Guide.

Upgrade to edna Groups - Phase out of Sandpit |

edna Groups will be upgraded to Moodle 1.9 by 1 September 2008. We are inviting Group owners to help us test the pre-production implementation of Groups between 18 and 21 August 2008. If you would be interested in participating, please join the announcements list either via the web-based form or by sending a blank email to join-groupstesting@edna.edu.au.
In order to streamline our service offerings, the edna Sandpit will become a category of the main edna Groups site. The Sandpit category will be a test-bed for new modules and activities rather than new versions of Moodle. If you own an edna Sandpit, you will receive updates to advise of when the migration will occur.

World internet project finds Australia is still a nation digitally divided |
|
The ARC Centre of Excellence for the Creative Industries and Innovation’s (CCI) Digital Futures Report found that while almost three quarters of Australians use the internet and almost 80% of these users have home broadband connection, one fifth of Australians have never used the net. The study also found that Broadband technology – as opposed to dial-up connection – changes what people do in fundamental ways.

Government welcomes release of CRC review |
|
Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, has welcomed the release of the review of Australia's Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) program, as an important contribution to the broader examination of Australia’s National Innovation System. The CRC review was undertaken by Professor Mary O’Kane, who was supported by the Collaboration Working Group of the National Innovation System Review. That review is now due to report to the Government by 29 August 2008, providing a Green Paper to be released shortly thereafter.

Minister thanks stakeholders for submissions to the Bradley Review |

The Rudd Government’s Review of Higher Education received a total of 257 submissions by the closing date yesterday, following the release of a discussion paper last month.
The Review, whose expert panel is chaired by Emeritus Professor Denise Bradley AC, joined by Mr Peter Noonan, Dr Helen Nugent AO and Mr Bill Scales AO, now has the task of developing a blueprint for the future of the higher education sector.
It will report on the sector’s capacity to meet the needs of Australian society and the national economy, and the options available for ongoing reform.

Closing the gap in Indigenous education |
|
Seventeen new classrooms and 19 additional teachers are already being delivered to remote communities in the Northern Territory as a result of additional Australian Government investment. In partnership with the Northern Territory Government and education authorities, the Australian Government has delivered these additional resources to schools to help close the gap in the educational outcomes of Indigenous Australians. The first 19 of a promised 50 new teachers in 2008 have taken up their postings in remote NT schools.

University student numbers pass the one million milestone |
|
The 2007 Higher Education Students Statistics Collection shows that, for the first time in Australia, over one million students are enrolled at higher education institutions.
In 2007 the total number of students reached 1 029 846, an increase of 4.7 per cent on 2006 figures. This increase is partly due to the introduction of new reporting requirements for private universities, but student numbers at public universities continue to grow, with a 2.1 per cent increase recorded between 2006 and 2007. The number of overseas higher education students also grew in 2007, with 254 414 enrolled in public universities in that year, an increase of 3.2 per cent on 2006.

Higher education expenditure on R&D (HERD) in Australia in 2006 was $5,404.4 million. This represents an increase of 24.9% in current price terms over 2004 and 15.1% in chain volume terms. Over the ten years to 2006, HERD increased at a two-yearly rate of 26.8% in current price terms and 13.5% in chain volume terms.

Australia must rewrite privacy laws for the Information Age |

The Australian Law Reform Commission’s (ALRC) landmark report For Your Information: Australian Privacy Law and Practice (ALRC 108), is the culmination of a two year inquiry conducted by the ALRC. The report contains 295 recommendations to improve Australia’s privacy framework.
ALRC President, Professor David Weisbrot, said that “Although the federal Privacy Act is only 20 years old, it was introduced before the advent of supercomputers, the Internet, mobile phones, digital cameras, e-commerce, sophisticated surveillance devices and social networking websites—all of which challenge our capacity to safeguard our sensitive personal information.

Rudd Government delivers $16.2 million to Griffith University |
|
Griffith University has received $16.2 million from the Australian Government’s Better Universities Renewal Funding to help update its infrastructure. The funding will assist the university with important capital works.
These upgrades will ease pressure on existing student service facilities and provide students, researchers and staff with much-needed access to modern teaching, learning and research facilities.

National Quality Standards Framework consultations |

Rigorous new quality standards and a new five category quality rating system is being developed to drive improvement in the quality of child care and early learning and give parents more information about their child care centre or preschool.
A discussion paper has been released to guide the extensive consultation process planned for August and September.

New appointment strengthens CSIRO Board |
|
Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research announced the appointment of Professor Ian Chubb AC as a part-time member of the CSIRO Board.
Professor Chubb is the Vice Chancellor of the Australian National University and the Chair of the International Alliance of Research Universities.

Collaborating for a purpose – review of the collaborative research centres program |

As part of a broader examination of Australia's National Innovation System, this report examines Australia's Cooperative Research Centres program, making a series of recommendations for change in relation to:
- funding and frequency of selection rounds
- objectives of the program
- broadening participation
- co-funding arrangements
- program administration
- evaluation arrangements, and
- positioning and integration of CRCs within the National Innovation System.
The review also recommends the creation of a new program to support the development of closer relationships in those industries and sectors where little collaboration currently occurs.

Launch of SIF and SCORM pilot |

The SIF Association and the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) officially launched the pilot utilizing SIF and SCORM. This partnership aims to enable the right learning resources to be linked to the right learner for instructor or self-lead learning. Altimately, the SIF and SCORM pilot activities will better enable this linkage to take place leading to more powerful learning opportunities.
Data from the SIF Implementation Specification will be used in SCORM and data identified in SCORM will be used in SIF. To leverage lessons learned, documentation and supporting information will be provided. The pilot will be completed in spring 2009.
